The Amber Coast

The Amber Coast is located on the Northern Coast of the Dominican Republic and is a terrific destination for a surf trip. Warm water, friendly people, reef breaks, and sizable surf can be found here. Fly in to Puerto Plata.

wave next to La Preciosa

Visiting surfers may want to rent a car or go to a surf camp that will pick you up from and take you to the airport and take you to the beach daily as driving can be a little nerve-wracking in the D.R. There are plenty of options for lodging and eating as well as tourist shops. Bring your shortboard or longboard, fish, and a step-up. Trunks should suffice, but a wetsuit top is nice as it can get overcast, rainy, and windy. This is a very popular wind-surfing and kite-boarding destination.

Surf breaks here include Encuentro which has a variety of waves, some more crowded than others. La Preciosa is an excellent reef break located in a beautiful bay and should not be missed if it is breaking. This wave can only handle a small crowd, but some decent size. There are plenty of other waves along this stretch of coast.
