Hearing the words “Miami-Dade County” brings a lot of things to mind: episodes of Cops, Scarface, cocaine, Miami Vice, CSI Miami, etc., but not surfing. Though it is rare, this part of the country does get surf from time to time. People have been surfing in Miami-Dade County for decades and sometimes there is very good surf to ride.
The water temperature stays a warm temperature year round, but sometimes the air temperature gets cold when a strong Northeastern storm pushes some waves down. These waves can be very good when they do make it all the way down to Miami. There are some surf shops to get equipment and definitely plenty of restaurants, hotels, motels, and cafes. Surfboards that are good to have in this area are longboards, fish/hybrid, and a regular shortboard. In the winter time a fullsuit or long sleeve spring, or wetsuit top is nice for protection against the cold air. Trunks can be worn year round because the water temp rarely drops below 70.
Normally surfers ride a lot of windswell, but there are also sometimes long period swells. Occasionally South Beach can have peaky, fun barrels and many pros from around Florida make the trek to South Beach to get some warm water barrels.
